Coil
The Gay Man's Guide To Safer Sex +2
There are very few contrbutors to the electronic music sphere who can be compared to Coil. In terms of their ethos, their history and their incredibly unique, often bewildering, musical creations, they were like no other. In 1992 they were commissioned to create the soundtrack for groundbreaking instructional video aimed at gay men. At the time AIDS and safe sex were hot topics, making the video essential for safeguarding the health of millions of gay men around the world. Amazingly, it became recognised as one of the most important recordings of its time thanks to an extremely compassionate, open-minded approach which included using common slang terms, graphic footage of sex and a remarkably progressive outlook. Coil’s close links with gay culture and previous work – including music for a film called Blue, which documented Derek Jarman’s deteriorating health, due to AIDS – made them an inspired choice. A very special collection of music, not only because of its wonderful production but also because of its historic and cultural impact.
